âI didnât see their faces,â Mom revealed nervously. âThey were dressed all in black. They had masks on.â
âThatâs okay,â I told her. âJust tell me what you did see.â
âThere were two of them,â she began. âThey came up behind her.â
âDid they have guns, or knives or tasers orâ¦â
Mom shook her head slowly. âNo. Nothing like that.â
âSpears, maces, grenades,â God suggested unhelpfully.
âReally?â I mocked.
âWhat? Itâs a museum. Probably not hard to find here,â the lizard replied defensively.
âI didnât see any weapons,â Mom said, ignoring our squabbling. âI didnât see their faces. Iâm useless.â She hung her head, and I could see that her lower lip was trembling.
âNo,â I told her, grabbing her arm. âThis is helpful.â
âThey were just so quiet and quick,â she said.
I frowned. That description sounded familiar. Dressed all in black, no faces visible, quiet, quick. Itâs actually exactly how I would describe ninjas.
I scanned the room, searching for Ms. Whitehat. Was she somehow responsible for this? She was the only person I knew who had ninjas at her beck and call.
âNinjas,â God whispered, echoing my thoughts.
âThen they just picked her up and carried her away,â Mom continued with her story.
âSo you didnât actually see them hurt her?â I asked, confused. After all, she had told me that Adelain had been killed. Plus, Iâd seen the blood with the hat in the restroom.
âNo,â Mom said, doubt creeping into her voice. âI just assumed that when two men carry a woman off that theyâre going to kill her.â
âItâs not a totally insane assumption,â God piped up from my chest.
I rubbed my motherâs arm, trying to soothe her. It might not be a crazy assumption, but it had been made by someone who lived with insanity.
âI should have done something,â Mom said, wringing her hands nervously.
âWhat could you have done?â I asked. âYou came and got me.â
âAnd you didnât believe me,â Mom accused, not making any effort to hide the hurt in her voice.
I winced. âIâm sorry.â
âThey took her, Maggie,â she said worriedly. âAnd nobodyâs looking for her.â
âI am,â I promised. âI need you to go back and sit with Aunt Susan.â
Mom rolled her eyes. âSheâs the chaperone from hell.â
âShe just wants whatâs best for you,â I murmured.
âSheâs controlling.â
âSheâs concerned,â I countered.
Mom cocked her head and squinted at me. âSince when do you defend Susan?â
âSince I got a better idea of how much she does to take care of the family.â
âUnlike me,â Mom said sadly.
âThatâs not what I meant, Mom,â I said, giving her a quick hug. âIâm just saying that Aunt Susan does a lot. More than people know, Iâm sure.â
âLike you?â
I blinked, surprised at the clarity that I heard in my motherâs tone as she asked that question. âI try to do my part,â I replied awkwardly.
âIâve heard that you do more than your part,â Mom said.
I wanted to ask her who had told her that. I wanted to know what their read was on what I did. Before I could ask, though, Mom said, âIâm so proud of the woman youâve become, Maggie.
